NYS Closes ERAP

Published on January 29, 2023 by Yvonne Peña

New York State’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) closed its application portal on January 20, 2023 at 9:00pm (EST). This means that the State is no longer accepting ERAP applications. Applications that were submitted before the closing of the portal will be processed in the order received in accordance to program rules.

Applications of households with rental subsidies (such as NYCHA Public Housing, Section 8, FHEPS, etc.,) that applied prior to the closing of the portal will not be reviewed or processed until all other applications are processed and paid, as that is part of the program’s rules.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, tenants have remained responsible for rent; there have been no rent suspensions or rent cancellations. ERAP first opened its application on June 1, 2021, and has processed applications for low- and moderate-income renter households in NYS at risk of homelessness or housing instability due to a financial hardship caused by the pandemic. Eligible households have been able to receive up to 12 months of rental and utility arrears and an additional 3 months of prospective rental assistance under ERAP. More information on ERAP can be found here.

The State is still processing eligible ERAP applications submitted through November 30, 2022. Additional applications are expected to be reviewed and processed in the future as funds become available. Households in NYC who have rent arrears and missed the opportunity to complete an ERAP application can apply for an emergency assistance grant, known as “one-shot deals,” from HRA. For information on one-shot deals, click here.
