Medicare Part B – Immunosuppressive Drugs (Part B – ID)

Individuals who have Medicare for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) can maintain Medicare Part B coverage for 36 months following a kidney transplant; Part B covers immunosuppressive drugs, among other benefits and services. Medicare coverage ends 36 months following the transplant, unless the individual subsequently becomes eligible due to age or disability. Historically, there has been no Medicare coverage following these 36 months.

Starting January 1, 2023, Medicare will have a new benefit for individuals who have completed the 36-months of Part B coverage but who do not have other coverage to pay for ongoing immunosuppressive drug coverage. The new coverage is called Part B – Immunosuppressive Drugs, or Part B – ID - will pay only for immunosuppressive drugs. The coverage will have a monthly premium ($97.10 in 2023); coverage is subject to the Part B annual deductible ($226 in 2023) and cost-sharing (typically 20%). Individuals with higher incomes may be subject to higher premiums for this coverage; those with limited incomes can apply for the Medicare Savings Program to assist with premium and cost-sharing.

Individuals who are eligible for this coverage can enroll at any time and will not be subject to a late enrollment period. Individuals can enroll as of October 1 by contacting the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. Coverage can start on or after January 1, 2023.
