​Medicaid Dental Benefits – Expected to expand in 2024

As a result of a 2018 lawsuit, Ciaramella et. al. v. Bassett, brought against New York State by the Legal Aid Society, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, Medicaid beneficiaries are expected to see increased coverage for dental services in 2024. While the settlement is still awaiting court approval, services to be expanded including the following services, as medically necessary: Crowns and root canals; replacement dentures; and dental implants and related services.

Historically, Medicaid has not provided root canals or crowns until a person had lost over half of their back teeth; the individual has been required to have their teeth pulled instead of treated if they had eight back teeth (four pairs) touching.
