Extra Help/Low Income Subsidy amount for 2023
In 2023, individuals who qualify for full Extra Help (also known as the Low-Income Subsidy Program, LIS) can enroll in a standard Part D plan with a monthly premium of up to $38.90. Individuals with Medicaid and/or a Medicare Savings Program (MSP) are automatically enrolled in Extra Help. Individuals can also apply for Extra Help with the Social Security Administration.
In addition to having a premium subsidy, those with Extra Help also benefit from $0 deductible and low copays. Extra Help can be used with either a standalone Part D plan (which works with Original Medicare) or with a Medicare Advantage Plan with Part D. Having Extra Help also allows an additional Special Enrollment Period to make additional changes to their Part D coverage mid-year; plan changes can be made one a quarter for the first 9- months of the calendar year, with the change effective the month after one makes the change.
