Home Delivered Meals: Changes under COVID-19

T + T

Summary

Home delivered meals continue to be available during the COVID-19 pandemic. The eligibility criteria remain the same for Citymeals On Wheels and God’s Love We Deliver programs.

NYC Food Delivery Assistance was created in response to many individuals who do not have anyone to shop for them and are at an increased medical risk or homebound, don’t qualify for Citymeals or God’s Love programs, and are unable to afford the delivery fees.

Invisible Hands is a community-based organization of over 10,000 volunteers delivering groceries, prescriptions, and other necessities to those most vulnerable to COVID-19, including the elderly, disabled and immunocompromised.

Citymeals On Wheels

Citymeals on Wheels continues to provide services during the COVID-19 pandemic to eligible seniors age 60 or older who is physically and/or mentally disabled and in need of assistance, is unable to prepare nutritious meals or have no friends or family to do so for him/her and is able to live safely at home if services are provided.

There are no immigration, residency or financial criteria for Citymeals on Wheels. However, services are targeted to low-income older people with the greatest economic or social need.

Qualifying individuals must be living with a chronic or life-altering illness that requires nutrition intervention, such as cancer, dementia, renal failure, ALS, HIV/AIDS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or other serious conditions, which must be verified by a physician. GLWD evaluated each application on a case-by-case basis.

In addition, applicants must have some restrictions in their activities of daily living such as difficulty standing or walking, cooking and shopping and the individual must obtain a physician’s verification of the illness and limitations. Individuals must also be able to store meals and ability to reheat meals and be available at home for delivery.
